Donati Law, PLLC recovered $360,000 for bus drivers with the Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA) who were shorted overtime wages, and TopVerdict.com has recognized the verdict as one of the Top 100 Wage & Hour Violation Settlements in the United States in 2020.
Details of the Case
According to the Memphis Flyer, MidSouth Transportation Management, Inc., (MTM) violated the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) by failing to properly compensate MATA workers for exceeding 40 hours of work in a workweek. In the lawsuit, Boyland v. Mid-South Transportation Management, Inc., bus operators alleged that they were paid some but not all of the overtime they were entitled to.
One driver had been employed with MATA since 1997 and regularly worked 100-hour weeks. Instead of getting 1.5 times his regular pay, he received no more than his regular rate – and sometimes half of that. As our very own William Ryan explains, MATA bus drivers have been bringing overtime concerns to MTM management for more than 20 years.
MTM knew bus drivers worked overtime without proper compensation and “willfully failed and refused to pay.” Donati Law, PLLC was pleased to “come to a resolution that fairly compensates these hardworking individuals who work long hours to keep our city connected and accessible.”
We are also proud of our TopVerdict.com recognition, a truly exceptional, fact-based achievement extended to the U.S. law firms and attorneys who have obtained one of the highest jury verdicts, settlements, or court awards in the nation.
