A high percentage of Tennesseans are uninsured because their medical conditions now prevent them from working. In some cases, applying for benefits is the only way these citizens can get health insurance.
The Affordable Care Act is a healthcare measure that can benefit all Tennesseans. In the next few weeks, Governor Haslam will be deciding whether to accept billions of dollars in federal funds to expand Tenncare (Medicaid) to as many as 330,000 uninsured Tennesseans living in or near poverty. If Tennessee rejects these funds, hundreds of thousands of these citizens will remain uninsured. Health insurance can make all the difference in a person’s life and can, at times, be lifesaving.
If Tennessee rejects these funds, many hospitals, especially in rural areas, will face significant cutbacks, including closings and job cuts. This will have a hard impact on the local economy and healthcare in these communities.
