Mandatory budget cuts go in effect on Friday, March 1, 2013, and like many other federal agencies, the Social Security Administration will certainly feel the effects. While payment of benefits will not be affected, day-to-day operations and the Social Security Administration’s administrative budget will be reduced.
According to the Office of the Press Secretary, the Social Security Administration will “be forced to curtail service to the public and reduce program oversight efforts designed to make sure benefits are paid accurately and to the right people.” This may result in “a reduction in service hours to the public, the closure of some offices, and a substantial growth in the backlog of Social Security disability claims.” (Excerpts via http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2013/02/08/fact-sheet-examples-how-sequester-would-impact-middle-class-families-job)
